CHAPTER 15

Mexico. Puerto Natan, to be more specific. One glimpse makes me want to write a song about Puerto Natan. Marcus wasn’t kidding about it being beautiful. That’s obvious from the moment the Intrepid cruises into port at the pinkest, orangest time of day, a time for fairy tales and travel magazine photoshoots. Sailboats by the dozen bob in the champagne-pink waves of the bay. The four of us stand spellbound at the prow while Marcus, with a cheerful yell of “Keep your eye out for a parking space,” pilots us into port. Excitement seems to crackle off each of us, and the wind that blows through our hair and t-shirts makes us look like we’re in an ad for youth and daring.

Here and there fishermen are parking their boats for the day. We pass a young shirtless fisherman covering the motor on a twelve-footer with a tarp. Surrounding his bare brown feet are glittering, silver-scaled fish in a jumble of blue nets. A sheathed knife hangs from a belt around his waist. His thick black hair hangs in his eyes and his skin is like mocha. He looks up at the Intrepid with indifference at first but then begins waving wildly. Clemente’s the first of us to wave back. Sometimes I forget how widely known we Warriors are; even when I remember I can barely believe it. Colby starts waving back too, happy to ride the coattails of our fame.

“Ahoy!” calls Clemente.

“Warriors!” the fisherman yells, putting his hands on his hips and rocking back with a laugh. “Bienvenidos!”

Piper whispers to me with a grin, elbowing my ribs, “Threeway?”

We continue past and the shirtless fisherman has to grab on to the side of his boat when it rocks in our wake.
